3 stars

Strengths:

Feels very good in the hands and very accurate quick responses.

Weaknesses:

Absolutely horrible mouse wheel, WAY to sensitive. Side button is to far off from my thumb.

Additional Comments:

The mouse would be perfect if not for the mouse wheel.

Microsoft Comfort mouse 4500

Strengths:

Lasts long - takes a lot for it to die.

Weaknesses:

Rubber scroll wheel gets gummy & turns to mush making scrolling impossible. Gets gummy - stretches & eventually comes right off. Very big weakness that I wish MS would fix.

Additional Comments:

As long at the rubber on the scroll wheel stays solid - it lasts a long time... MS needs to find another compound to use on the scroll wheel...

Better off spending a little more

Strengths:

- Back and forward buttons are a nice touch. - Sides and back are decently grippy. - It points and clicks.

Weaknesses:

- Mouse is too light in the hand, so it can be hard to be slow / precise with movements, and easily make movements you didn't intend. - Scroll wheel is easily the worst I've used and is why I'm replacing this mouse with something better constructed. Every time I scroll on a document or web site, I will ultimately get phantom scrolling from the wheel if I left or right click, sometimes several times requiring me to reposition the mouse wheel. Very frustrating. Reproduced on several of these mice.

Additional Comments:

Microsoft produces high quality keyboards and mice, but this is not one of them. For the same money, the Microsoft Base Optical Mouse is superior, and the cheaper Logitech B100 Optical Mouse mops the floor with the Comfort Mouse 4500... and that is taking into account the lack of back/forward buttons on those two mice. If you need back/forward buttons: get another mouse, you don't want this one.

OK for the price

Strengths:

- You will rarely find a mouse with back/forward buttons at this price range. - It's a pretty big mouse, great for a guy like me with massive hands.

Weaknesses:

- The bottom of the mouse is made of a cheap plastic that melts over time, leaving a sticky surface. - The mouse wheel also seems to be made from the same melting material, rubbing against the shell (and leaving a terrible mess) - The left button started logging extra clicks when I held the button at varying pressures.

Additional Comments:

I'll admit I came to voice my concerns for this mouse. I've had this mouse for about 5 years though so it has some good mileage. That said, I cannot recommend prolonged usage. The melting material is a huge pain to deal with and requires too much maintenance in the long run.

Comfort Mouse 4500

Strengths:

Don't know of any strengths as I didn't use it for very long before replacing it.

Weaknesses:

Normally I never write reviews but the mouse wheel was so terrible that I have to warn people. Some apps just would not scroll with it and it had to be pressed hard to click. Guess I would say that the wheel felt like really low quality.

Additional Comments:

I wouldn't spend money on it again if just looking for a generic mouse. I went back to an old mouse that was still made by Microsoft but at least it was of some quality and actually worked.
